Cycling to school in UK

Eight percent of primary and secondary school pupils cycle to school every day, and 26 percent ride in at least once a week.

Cycling levels had increased in recent years thanks to Bike it project. The Bike It project works directly with schools making the case for cycling in their school travel plans, supporting school champions who want to promote cycling and demonstrating that cycling is a popular choice for children to get to school. The project adds to local investment in cycle routes and bike sheds by involving children, teachers and parents and enabling them to take the small steps that are necessary to make a real difference.

Bike it also holds The Big Pedal national bike-to-school challenge. Every trip to school by bike will count towards a “virtual” stage race round the UK. Scooters count too. Children participating in challenge get fantastic prizes. Last year the winner received two bikes and an amazing day with Team M.A.D., Europe’s top mountain bike team. There are regional and daily stage prizes.
